Nokia's first device after Microsoft is an iPad mini clone that runs Android

Image
Nokia's first device after Microsoft is an iPad mini clone that runs Android Nokia is back in the devices business just under seven months after  selling its devices and services unit to Microsoft  for $7.2 billion. Nokia is unveiling its N1 Android tablet today, days after revealing its  plans to license its brand name  and  teasing a black box on Twitter . Just like Xiaomi’s  attempts to emulate Apple’s iPad mini design , Nokia’s N1 has the same 7.9-inch screen size and even the same 2048 x 1536 resolution. Nokia has even opted for a single piece of anodized aluminum design.

Nokia's return to hardware begins with the $250 N1 Android tablet

Image
Nokia's return to hardware begins with the $250 N1 Android tablet Rumors of Nokia's demise have been greatly exaggerated. Its lineup might seem empty now that it's relinquished control of its Lumia smartphones to a lumbering giant and gave up on those low-cost Asha devices earlier this year, but that doesn't mean the company's done crafting consumer gadgets  just yet. Now Nokia's trying to revive its once-titanic consumer brand, starting with something a little... unorthodox. Meet the Nokia N1: a 7.9-inch Android tablet running some Nokia software that looks like a giant iPhone. It'll cost you $250 when it launches, but it's slated to land in China first in time for Chinese New Year (that's February 19, 2015) with a release in Russia to follow soon after. source

The Nokia N1 will be among the first devices with a reversible USB connector

Image
The Nokia N1 will be among the first devices with a reversible USB connector The Nokia name lives on in the newly announced N1 tablet, whose spec sheet includes a highlight we haven't yet seen on any other device: a  reversible USB Type-C connector . The specification for the next generation of USB cables was  settled in August , but with most companies withholding their major hardware upgrades until the Consumer Electronics Show in January, there's been an understandable dearth of Type-C-compatible devices announced. The Nokia N1 is thus the first high-profile launch to feature it, though it might not be the first to market as the Finnish company proposes a release in time for the Chinese New year, which will be marked on February 19th in 2015.

How to Remove WhatsApp Blue Ticks aka Read Receipts

Image
How to Remove WhatsApp Blue Ticks aka Read Receipts Much to the chagrin of its users,  WhatsApp quietly introduced read receipts  (letting people see exactly when a message is read, not just delivered) earlier this month. The app always showed one tick mark when you sent a message, which changed to two grey ticks when it was delivered. Now, the app shows two blue ticks when the recipient has read your message This feature was rolled out without an update to the app itself. This means that there was no privacy setting to disable read receipts when the feature was rolled out.  The lack of this basic feature in WhatsApp really ticked us off , and we had promised that we'd be back with a tutorial on how to disable WhatsApp blue ticks as soon as it was possible. True to our word, here we are now that WhatsApp has unveiled this feature for Android.

Intel to Merge Loss-Making Mobile Business With PC Division

Image
Intel to Merge Loss-Making Mobile Business With PC Division Intel Corp., (INTC)  struggling to gain a foothold in mobile computing, is merging its mobile phone and tablet businesses with the division that makes chips for personal computers. The reorganization of the two units, which have been running at a loss, announced internally, will be completed early next year,  Chuck Mulloy , a spokesman for the  Santa Clara , California-based chipmaker, said yesterday. “The lines are blurring between PCs, tablets, phablets and phones,” Mulloy said. “The idea is to accelerate the implementation and create some efficiency so that we can move even faster.” The new combined unit will be led by Kirk Skaugen, who currently heads the PC-chips business. Hermann Eul, currently in charge of phone and tablet chips, will stay on to help the transition and until a new post for him is announced in the first quarter of 2015, Chief Executive Officer Brian Krzanich told employees in a me...

Sony IMX230 sensor features 192-point autofocus, Z4 bound

Image
Sony IMX230 sensor features 192-point autofocus Sony just unveiled its latest mobile IMX230 EXMOR RS camera sensor, which might very well be the star on the back of the future Xperia Z4. The sensor shoots at 21MP resolution, just like the IMX135 it replaces, and uses stacked design. Sony says this makes the CMOS imaging sensor smaller and outputs higher image quality and improved functionality. The size of the IMX230 image sensor is 1/2.4" and the pixel size is 1.12μm. The sensor will be joined later by a 16MP stacked CMOS image sensor. In the photo below, you can see how the new IMX230 sensor fares against its predecessor in HDR shooting. The sensor is the first CMOS one to feature an onboard image plane phase detection AF signal processing function. This helps it achieve superior focus tracking of fast-moving objects, compared to the old generation image sensor. In fact, the IMX230 sports 192-point autofocus, which is impressive considering its predecessor packs 172...
